Encaustic Sculptures

These mixed media sculptures are covered in an encaustic skin that is either enhanced by a scrimshaw technique (etched and highlighted with oil stick) or shined by buffing. The figures are intentionally created as such. Poems are etched into their skin. Translucent waxed lace creates an exoskeleton.

The bark and leaf reliefs are not intentional. They are inspired by the art media. In the encaustic process of applying, fusing and carving colored wax, the source object changes so that a piece of bark evokes a human figure or a crowd of people.

The source objects are reminders of my life. That they evolve into flying creatures or a jumbled crowd is a function of my spirit and imagination.
